In part 1 of this series we talked about some of the conditions that termites are looking for to build colonies including cracks in the soil, wood piles or decaying trees, debris, cracks or openings in your home or foundation, standing water in gutters and moist soil that’s common here in Houston. In part 3 we will discuss some general termite prevention tips.
Conditions that termites are looking for were described above, so it behooves you to keep your gutters clean and try to minimize or eliminate sources of standing water around your home. Identify and remove any contact between soil and your home’s foundation. Stacked wood, old newspaper, debris, nearby mulch beds, etc. in contact with your home is like rolling out the red carpet to these destructive pests! Be sure to seal any cracks or exposures around your home including the foundation, attic, windows and ventilation openings to provide a barrier to entry.
While performing the above steps and during other routine home maintenance, be on the lookout for telltale signs of termite problems: mud tubes, bubbled paint on walls, wings, sawdust and other evidence of termites. However, even the most vigilant home owner is susceptible to termite problems and may require Houston termite pest control in the form of preventative or treatment measures.
The average home owner simply may not know what to look for or how to protect their home from being overrun by insects. It’s a good idea to have a professional termite inspection from a reputable exterminator. The pros will know what to look for, be able to assess the extent of any infestation and be able to take the proper measures to treat the problem. This is not an area you want to take chances with, as your home is your most significant investment and termite damage can be disastrous. Regular termite inspections can prevent or reduce the severity of damage by catching these pests before they have time to do their damage to your property.
