Termites – Do you have them?

Mar 28, 2017 | termite control

Termites are focused. They will relentlessly seek out wood sources to feed and grow their colony. They are looking for cellulose, which is the organic fiber found in dead wood and plant matter. They will even eat the cellulose-based material in drywall, paper and plastic. Termites never stop to rest. They eat 24/7 so termite control should be constant as well. Foundation cracks as small as 1/64” in width can allow termites entry into your home. It’s not enough to just treat around your home. Colony elimination should be the goal to keep termites off your property and away from your home. A single colony can have millions of termites and spread across a half an acre.

Termites eat wood from the inside out to build their colonies. You might not even be aware you have a termite infestation until there is significant structural damage. In our part of Texas having favorable termite conducive conditions, this can mean it’s not a matter of if you get termites but when. Having your home regularly inspected for conducive conditions or signs of termite activity should be on your annual home maintenance to-do list.

Most pest control companies will offer you options for getting rid of termites, but getting it done, and getting it done with a company that is dependable and trustworthy sadly don’t always go hand in hand. Friends and especially neighbors can be one of your best resources when asking for recommendations. When calling companies, be sure to ask if techs have ongoing training. How long has the company been in business? Is a warranty included? Even your local BBB can be a great source of information on the company you choose. A well-trained Pest Control Operator should be able to confidently identify whether or not your unwelcome pest is a termite.
