Swarming Nuisances

Apr 4, 2015 | Uncategorized

There are many pleasantries that are associated with the warmer weather that is quickly approaching; like picnics, barbecues, local sporting events and time spent at the lake or backyard swimming pools. However, there are some aspects we’d much rather forget. Along with the spring and summer warmth come flying pests including wasps, hornets, yellow jackets and bees.

Warlike Wasps

Wasps are often mistaken for bees, because they are alike in the fact that they both pollinate plants. Wasps look very similar to bees as well. However, unlike bees, wasps tend to exhibit more aggressive behavior. In addition to being a much more hostile type of flying nuisance, wasp nests tend to be quite a serious disturbance. Damage to structures and wooden fences are often a sure sign of a wasp infestation. Wasps tend to build their nests in trees, beneath homes and under gutters. Removing wasp nests can be very a very dangerous task. Aggravating a colony will lead to possible numerous wasp stings.

Hawkish Hornets

Hornets are a lot like wasps, in that their nature is more aggressive than that of the common bee. Hornets are known to use paper to build their nests. Hornet stings can be just as dangerous as a wasps, especially to those who are allergic. A colony of hornets will also cause damage to trees and shrubs.

Ill-Tempered Yellow Jackets

Yellow jackets get their name form the yellow color on their bodies. Although not all varieties are yellow, some are black and white. Yellow jackets are typically longer and also more aggressive than bees. Yellow jackets enjoy feasting on the carcass of dead insects, they also like to eat food that humans consume, especially food of a sweet variety. It is not uncommon for yellow jackets to build a colony in an attic or garage.

Baneful Bees

Even though bees are helpful when it comes to farming and gardening, they can become a serious nuisance. Carpenter bees can cause severe damage to a home. Bees have been known to form colonies under house siding or within walls. Bee hives and honeycombs have been removed from infrastructure of homes that were infested by bees. Carpenter bees are excellent at boring holes into any type of untreated wood. The last thing you want in your home is a thriving colony of bees.
