Spiders in your closet

Nov 12, 2018 | Spider Control

There is never a good time for finding spiders in your closet. If you’re like most people, the spare linen closet where you keep extra pillows and blankets is rarely opened until the holidays roll around and friends or family stay the night so cleaning out ahead of time will help avoid awkward situations later.

Some pests, like spiders will not go into deep hibernation with the cold season coming up. Spiders will be looking for a warm place to hold out the cold and rainy season and rarely used closets are a solution to staying safe until the weather warms up again.

You may not want to think about it but now is the perfect time to add a few simple items to your holiday to-do list.

  • Shake out and if needed, wash sheets or blankets that have been undisturbed for a while.
  • Utilize storage tubs or bins for storing these seldom used blankets, towels or sheets and to keep insects out
  • Low on space? Extra-large plastic zip-seal bags will keep linens sealed tight and take up less room.
  • Vacuum spider webs from any corners of the closet or other areas of the home.
  • pure peppermint oil on a cotton ball placed in the closet corners will help repel pests.

Remember, spiders are looking for a secluded and dark environment to thrive.

Clearing other closets in the home would also be a good idea at this time. Replace cardboard boxes with clear storage shoe bins with lids. Shake out rarely worn, closed toe shoes before putting them on in case spiders have made them a home. Pick up and hang clothing from closet floors to allow thorough vacuuming of the floor and removing spider webs from corners of closets.

While many common house spiders are more of a nuisance, they can bite if provoked. Cleaning and proper storage of seldom used items will go a long way to discourage spider issues in your closets. Treat for other pests to remove a spider’s food source.
