Seeing a large roach scurry across the kitchen floor in the middle of the night when you were just wanting a drink of water can make you forget that thirst. Roaches to me are disgusting. Roaches have been around longer than people and will remain here long after we’re gone, but it doesn’t mean I have to like them. And it’s not just the looks of them. Roach infestation prevention has far reaching health concerns. Roaches spread disease and contaminate your home with bacteria and leave behind their droppings. Roaches can contribute to respiratory issues and trigger allergies, asthma and other breathing problems.
I’ve lived long enough in Texas to know, they love our great state. We seem to provide all the requirements for these insects to thrive. Year-round warmer weather and minimal winters. Abundant water sources. Excessive garbage and plenty of homes as well as undisturbed areas to shelter in. And if they can’t find this outside, they will find a way inside.
The statement I get quite often from homeowners is “I keep a clean house!”, but we’ve found it’s not just a matter of what you do see, but what you don’t see. There are many ways roaches are finding their way into your home. Their flat bodies allow them to fit through small cracks that you might be overlooking.
Some helpful tips for roach infestation prevention in your home:
- Eliminate moisture. Check for leaky pipes, or areas of excessive moisture like the bathrooms.
- Take out the trash. Roaches are attracted to garbage. Keep garbage cans and pet food containers securely sealed.
- Don’t leave dirty dishes overnight in the sink.
- Seal up entry points, cracks and crevices.
- Keep debris, wood piles and garbage cans as far away from your home perimeter as possible
- Sweep up/clear away food debris
Preventing a roach infestation is far easier than getting rid of one. Roaches may be survivors, but that doesn’t mean they belong in your home. By taking proactive steps to keep your living space clean and secure, you can make it clear that roaches aren’t welcome. And if they do manage to sneak in, remember that professional help is just a call away. Don’t let these uninvited guests overstay their welcome—evict them for good!
Between the heat of the summer and the growth of the city, these large roaches are making themselves far too comfortable for me to ever get used to.
