Attic Pests in holiday boxes

Nov 26, 2018 | pest control

Thanksgiving is over and ready or not, if you’re like me, it’s time to prepare the home for Christmas decorating. I keep my holiday décor tucked away and hidden in the attic so it’s been a year since these items were exposed to the light. When you are up in the attic, this will also be a good time to check for any possible attic pests in holiday boxes. Attic pests can range from roaches, spiders, silverfish, rodents and more. This range of possible pest activity may require a more thorough inspection of items and areas in the attic. Some of the more common signs you may have a pest issue are:

  • Pest droppings. Whether droppings are large or small, this is one of the more obvious signs and should be dealt with ASAP.
  • Gnaw marks along the wood or wires. It won’t take long for potential damage to promote a fire hazard or just an unexpected costly repair.Attic Pests in holiday boxes
  • Insulation disruption. Look for evidence of shredded insulation where nesting may be taking place
  • Cardboard boxes with books, clothes or other cherished items easily damaged by pests. Choose a better storage option to prevent further damage.

If you are bringing out last year’s boxes of décor, be sure to check thoroughly for any invading pests that may have been harboring in these boxes since last winter. Shake out your items to make sure there are no spiders or silverfish or other attic pests.

Store holiday items in sealed, airtight plastic tubs or containers with tight fitting lids. If you have been using cardboard boxes, this will be the best time to take advantage of the upcoming sales for holiday storage containers and swap out all cardboard boxes.

Cardboard boxes, loose paper and other cellulose based products provide not only shelter but food as well to Attic Pests in holiday boxes.

Be sure to check the outer perimeter of the attic as well. Look for overhanging branches. Have these limbs removed or trimmed back as needed to avoid easy access for rodent entry. Check the roofline for openings. Routine inspections and pest proofing will help keep unwanted pests out and reduce pest damage.
